Getting started

This page explains how to use the Cosmic Ear Scanning review. The review lets you try the iPhone app as a customer would and leave comments on anything you'd change. Everything you add is saved straight away and shared with the whole team.

Signing in

  1. Open the review page, magsv.com/review/cosmic-ear.
  2. Enter the email and password Phil sent you, then press Sign in.

You stay signed in on that browser until you press Sign out, so next time the review opens straight away. Sign out if you use a shared computer.

Under the Sign in button, a line shows whether the page is connected to the review's database, even before you sign in. If sign-in doesn't work, the page says why; pass the small "Details for Phil" line on to Phil.

  2. MagsVision home. Back to the main website. You stay signed in.
  3. View switch. Show the iPhone, the iPhone and second screen together, or just the second screen.
  4. The app. A working iPhone prototype. Tap through it like a customer.
  5. Tabs. Comments, Flow, Test settings and, for admins, Admin.
  6. Add comment. Start a new comment, then tap what it's about.
  7. Comment list. Everyone's comments, newest at the bottom, with filters above.

Using the app

Tap buttons, type into fields and move between screens just as a customer would. A few things behave differently in the prototype:

  • Scan codes have 6 characters in the form AAA-AAA; the dash is added for you. Test codes: BBB-BBB is for both ears, LLL-LLL the left ear only, RRR-RRR the right ear only, and UUU-UUU has already been used. Any other code isn't recognised. "Scan QR code" opens a stand-in camera; tap the square to pretend BBB-BBB was scanned.
  • Which ears follows the code, so a left-ear code only offers the left ear.
  • Camera permission: the iPhone's "Allow camera" message is a copy of the real one. Try both answers.
  • The scan is simulated. It starts by itself and runs through six positions per ear, including a "too far" and an "out of view" moment, so you can see how customers are guided.
  • Nothing is sent anywhere. Test build notes on some screens remind you of this.

The tab bar at the bottom, in Apple's Liquid Glass style, has four tabs: Scan (the steps above, and it remembers where you were), Help (tips and Contact us), Settings (the scan target, shown as two picture panels) and About (version, privacy policy and Contact us). It hides while scanning and sending. The app follows the iPhone's Light or Dark setting on every screen; only the camera view itself stays dark.

The second screen

While customers scan, their iPhone faces away from them, so they watch a web page on a laptop, tablet or another phone instead. You can see and comment on that page too.

  1. Above the phone, choose iPhone and second screen.
  2. On the iPhone, go through to the scan. The website and a 5-character code (LE523 in the prototype) stay under the camera throughout.
  3. Type the code into the second screen and press Connect. From then on both devices follow the same scan. The scan doesn't wait for the second screen; it starts as soon as the ear is in view.

What the customer sees while scanning

  • The target is the Cosmic Ears logo. It's grey when the iPhone is out of position, turns blue as the ear gets closer to it, and goes green when it locks on and captures.
  • Arrows beside the target show which way to move the iPhone.
  • Progress shows as a percentage bar, plus six bars that turn green as each position is captured, so customers know how many are left.
  • Exit scan under the code stops the scan and returns to the guide.

In Test settings you can switch the target to H3D's standard ring to compare. The second screen also has pages for switching ears, a paused scan and a finished scan; they appear automatically as the iPhone moves on.

Adding a comment

  1. Open the Comments tab and press Add comment. A banner confirms you're in comment mode.
  2. Tap the part you want to comment on: a button, a line of text, a picture, a whole screen, or anything on the second screen. It gets a violet outline.
  3. Type your comment and press Save comment, or Ctrl + Enter (Cmd + Enter on a Mac).

Your comment gets a number, and a matching numbered pin appears on the phone. Press Cancel or Esc to leave comment mode without saving.

Good comments
  • One point per comment, so each can be tracked and closed.
  • Say what you'd change and why, for example "Say how long the scan takes, because people will want to plan".
  • Comment on the exact part, not the whole screen, when you can.

Reading and tracking comments

Tap a numbered pin on the phone, or a card in the list, to open a comment. You'll see:

  • who wrote it, when, and on which build;
  • its status, which anyone can change;
  • Show me, which jumps to that screen and highlights the part;
  • replies, with a box to add your own;
  • its history: who added it and every status change.

You can delete your own comments; admins can delete any. Press All comments to go back to the list.

Filters, pins and export

  • Filters narrow the list by screen ("This screen" follows the phone), status, person and build. The number on the Comments tab counts open and in-progress comments.
  • Pins show open and in-progress comments on whatever the devices are showing. Tick Show done and won't-do pins to see closed ones too.
  • Changed parts: if a comment is about something that has since been redesigned, it says so instead of showing a pin.
  • Export → Copy for Claude copies the filtered comments as text, grouped by screen, ready to paste into a chat. Download spreadsheet saves them as a CSV for Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Everyone sees new comments, replies and status changes live, without reloading.

Flow and walkthrough

The Flow tab maps the customer's journey in order, with side routes underneath, such as the "can't scan" screen, the QR scanner and a failed send. The second screen has its own map below. A number beside a screen is its open comments.

  • Tap a step to open that screen on the phone.
  • Play runs the whole journey by itself, from welcome to sent, including connecting the second screen and scanning both ears. It switches on the second screen view for you.
  • Previous and Next step through it at your own pace. Tapping the phone pauses the walkthrough.

It's a good way to show the app to someone new before they start commenting.

iPhone

Open a group and tap a model. The phone changes to that model's screen size and shape (Dynamic Island, notch, camera hole or Home button), all drawn to the same scale, so you can check how screens fit on small and large phones.

  • Untested: the newest iPhones (18 Pro, 18 Pro Max and 17e). They have Face ID so they should scan, but haven't been tried yet, and sizes are approximate.
  • Can scan: every other iPhone with Face ID, grouped by generation.
  • Can't scan: iPhone 13 models: their camera doesn't work with the scanner. Press Get started to see what those customers are told.
  • Can't scan: no Face ID: iPhone SE, 8, 8 Plus and the foldable iPhone Duo.

Scan target

The Cosmic Ears mark, or H3D's standard ring to compare. Customers choose this in the app's Settings tab, from two picture panels; this switch changes the same setting.

Appearance

See the app in Light or Dark Mode, or match your own device. Every screen follows it, including scanning and sending.

Situations

  • Sending fails: shows what customers see if their scans can't be sent.
  • A scan position gets stuck: the third position doesn't capture and Skip this position appears.
  • Second screen loses connection: shows the reconnecting state on both devices.
  • Poor scan quality: after the left ear, the app says the scan missed part of the ear and asks to scan it again.

Start again

Restart the app goes back to the welcome screen and clears the code, ear choice and second screen.

App admin (mock-up)

The App admin tab shows how the Cosmic Ears team will change parts of the app without an app update, and without anyone signing in on the app. Change something and the prototype jumps to that screen and updates straight away. Here, changes only affect your own view; Reset to defaults puts everything back.

  • Notice banner: an optional message on the Welcome screen, such as holiday dispatch times.
  • Welcome text: the intro line.
  • End-screen buttons: up to 3, each with its text, style (main button, outline button or text link), link, and shown or hidden. Type finish as the link to close the scan.
  • While you wait panel: title, text and button, or hidden.
  • Sending animation: the Cosmic Ears loader, Docking, Re-entry or Transfer orbit.
  • Links and contacts: the second-screen address, privacy policy and support email.

It checks everything the way the real page will: one main button at most, one text link at most, links only to cosmicears.com, a real web address for the second screen, and a warning if something won't fit on the smallest iPhone. Consent wording is deliberately not editable.

Builds and What's new

The header with the Build menu and a What's new banner
The Build menu and the What's new banner
  • Each version of the prototype is a build. The Build menu at the top opens earlier builds so you can compare. A banner reminds you when you're not on the latest one, with a link back.
  • What's new appears once the first time you open a new build, listing what changed. Press Got it to close it, or reopen it from the header.
  • Every comment records the build it was made on. Comments from other builds are labelled, for example "Build 0.1.4", and the Build filter shows just one build's comments.

When the review is on hold

The review page with the Review on hold banner
A review on hold

An admin can pause the review, for example while a new build is being prepared. You'll see a dark Review on hold banner, often with a message saying why, and the devices get a violet outline.

While it's on hold you can still use the app, the Flow tab and the test settings, and read every comment. You can't add comments or replies until an admin reopens the review; the banner disappears for everyone as soon as that happens.

What the review records

Besides your comments, replies and status changes, the review records which screens and tabs you use, the test settings you try, and when you're active, so admins can see how the review is going on the admin dashboard. Nothing is recorded when you're signed out.

For anything else, contact Phil.

For admins

  • Dashboard: the Dashboard link in the header (admins only) shows who is reviewing now, time spent, comments by person and screen, a screen coverage map and an activity feed.
  • Admin tab: put the review on hold with an optional message for reviewers, and reopen it. While on hold, admins can still change statuses and delete comments to tidy up.
  • Reviewer list: shown on the Admin tab. Reviewers are added, removed and given new passwords in Supabase; the setup guide (SETUP.md) has the steps and the password reset command.
  • Check page: check.html shows which version of the review page is live, which Supabase project it uses, and tests a sign-in directly.
  • New builds: follow "Adding a new build" in the setup guide. Comments carry over automatically.
  • Getting comments to Claude: Export → Copy for Claude, then paste into the chat.
